Apr 1, 2023 | Blog, Indianapolis, Local News, Storm Damage

Last Friday, residents in many counties south of Indianapolis experienced severe weather at the beginning of what is shaping up to be a shocking storm season. Here’s the overview of what occurred:

  • What: Winds 60 – 85 mph
  • When: March 31, 2023
  • Where: Indianapolis, IN

What It Means for Your Home

Local news source IndyStar reported on their website that areas around South Indianapolis saw heavy winds and tornadoes throughout the area while residents documented debris, fallen trees, injuries, and even casualties.

That’s some cause for concern, but what exactly does that mean for your home?

Worries of High-Speed Winds

High wind speed can prove to be exceptionally damaging for your home. High winds, thunderstorms, and hail can put your shingles to the test as few other things can. They can cause shingles to lift, curl, peel, or blow off the roof entirely. Fallen limbs and other debris can cause extreme damage to the roof, siding, gutters, and other exterior fixtures.

The dangers provided by strong, gusty winds can do a lot of damage to your roof and property. Signs of wind damage on a roof include loose or missing shingles, chimney issues, curling or peeling shingles, granule loss, damaged soffit or fascia, and indoor leaks. High winds can also cause tree branches to fall and damage a roof.

According to the National Weather Service, winds at speeds between 60 and 75 mph are severe and cause significant damage to landscaping and structures. At this range, the wind will take down whole tree limbs, begin to uproot trees, rip off shingles that were in good condition and cause issues with chimneys. Beyond 75 mph, the wind will cause widespread damage to trees, flip mobile homes and cause significant roof damage to commercial buildings and homes.
