How long will you be living in your home?
Again, metal roofs are an investment, so if you plan to sell your home in less than five years, a metal roof is probably not the best option because you will be unlikely to recoup the higher upfront costs.
Do I really like this metal color?
Since metal roofs have a color guarantee of 30-40 years, you’re stuck with whatever color you choose. Certain colors are “trendy” or may be particularly suited to your personal taste. In other words, choose your color wisely, with sellability in mind if you don’t plan on being in the house for a long time.
Does my HOA allow metal roofs?
Not all HOAs allow metal roofs. Some have bylaws that only allow for shingles, or products that look like shingles. There are metal shingles on the market that are designed to mimic the look of asphalt shingles, but the price tag can be even higher than a panel metal roof.

Should I be concerned about oil canning?
Oil canning on metal panels is a process of light distortion on the panel from certain angles. Oil canning does not affect the efficacy of the panel at all, but may be considered undesirable from an aesthetic standpoint. Oil canning is much more likely to happen with smooth metal panels, meaning they do not have grooves running down the panels. These grooves, called striations, create rigidity within the panel and significantly reduce the likelihood of oil canning. The panel we automatically install is striated, but if you are going for a specific look, you may want to request the smooth panels, as these are popular on accent roofs for the more modern, sleek look.
Is my roof a good candidate for a metal roof?
Does your roof have decorative swoops or lots of cut up angles? Is the decking surface very uneven? Do you have stucco walls? What about accents on your rakes? Not all roofs work well with the rigid nature of metal. Though most roof designs can handle metal, you should be aware that the final product might look less smooth than a more forgiving shingle roof if you have imperfections in the decking system. A product called bubble wrap can help with this, but it’s best to ask a roofer if you have a complex roof shape before you get your heart set on metal.
Additionally, metal roofs have deeper flashings on the edges, which may cut into specialty or sensitive siding. Decorative carvings or shapes may also need to be removed or covered up with these edge metals.
