Roofing Resolutions: 5 Tips To Keep Your Roof in Shape All Year Long

Jan 18, 2023 | Blog, Noblesville, Roof Maintenance, Roof Repair

What is a resolution? At the beginning of each new year, that word is used extensively to focus on improvements in our lives. Resolution means “a firm decision to do or not do something.” Similar words are intention, decision, aspiration, and commitment.  It is a promise to yourself to improve on something in your life. Examples of a resolution might be to quit smoking, share more time with family, or read one book a month. These are all worthwhile goals. Unfortunately, after a month or so, our commitments fail because we don’t follow through.

Let’s focus on your roof for a moment. After all, that is why you are reading this! How can you make a plan to keep your roof in shape all year long? How can you resolve to do proper maintenance? The roofs on our homes are there as a barrier against weather elements, protect us, and serve as a cocoon of comfortable temperatures year round. Our roofing systems need to be addressed with care considering all they do to protect us, our families, and our prized possessions.

There are four steps to make a resolution, or commitment, to yourself:

  • Make sure it is timely
  • Be realistic
  • Make a plan
  • Reward yourself

These steps seem pretty simplistic. Let’s put them in action regarding roof maintenance. You have determined the time is right to focus on your roof. Done! You have determined it is a worthwhile pursuit, therefore should be completed. Done! Now, to make a plan. Let’s do just that! (Related blogs about roof maintenance and inspection)

Clean Out The Gutter System

A great place to start is cleaning out the gutters. Debris, nests, leaves, and branches can clog up the gutter system. When this happens, water can’t freely flow through the system and smoothly divert from the home. Instead, it can pool up near shingles, creating moisture damage, or even the beginning of moss and mildew. This is not a good combination for your roofing system! Make sure to clean out the gutter system at least once a year and after major storms.

Trim Overhanging Branches and Limbs

Trees are such a lovely addition to a well-kept property! However, if not taken care of, they can create damage to your roofing system. Take the time to trim back any overhanging branches and limbs, otherwise, a strong storm can break them off and land on your home. If you have concerns about how to properly trim back your trees, please contact a local professional to assist you. Safety should be of utmost concern!

Check the Flashings

Flashing around chimneys and vent pipes prevents water from leaking into your home. Make sure the areas are inspected yearly to prevent any complications. The old caulk can be easily removed, and new fresh caulk can be applied.

Keep the Roof Clean

Keep an eye open for any moss, mildew, or algae growing on your roof. Not only are these unhealthy for your roofing surface, but they also provide a messy, unkept appearance to your home when viewed from the road. Keeping the roof clean will also help the roofing material last longer. Moss holds in water which can cause havoc with asphalt shingles. Call a local roofing contractor if you need assistance with fungus removal.

Inspection of the Roof

Are you aware of what to look for when doing an inspection? Do you know the benefits of a yearly inspection? A thorough inspection can help determine if damage has occurred to your roof and if a repair is needed. It is best to look for broken, bent, split, or missing shingles. Do you have a metal roof? Look for broken fasteners, moisture problems, leaks, and drainage issues. Does your roof sag or warp when you view it from a distance? Can you spot areas of mold, mildew, and algae? If you are uncertain about how to go about doing a thorough inspection or do not trust yourself to walk on the roof, please make a simple phone call to Rojas Roofing in Noblesville for assistance!
